How to get to Chapada Diamantina

Fly into Salvador (SSA). From there it is about 420 km to Lencois, 6 to 7 hours by bus or car. For Vale do Capao you get off at Palmeiras and continue about 40 minutes on an unpaved road. Allow one day to arrive and one to return.

Leg 1: getting to Salvador
Salvador airport takes international flights and connections from every Brazilian capital. It is the way in for almost everyone heading to the Chapada.
There is an airport at Lencois (LEC), about 20 km from town on the BR-242. The operation is small and the frequency changes from season to season, so check before building your trip around it. When there is a flight, it saves a full day of road travel.
Leg 2: Salvador to the Chapada
By bus
This is how most people do it. Buses leave the Salvador terminal daily for Lencois and Palmeiras, including overnight services that arrive in the morning and save you a day. The journey takes 6 to 7 hours on the BR-324 and BR-242.
Book ahead over holidays and in high season. The timetable shifts through the year, so confirm when you buy.
By private car or transfer
About 5 hours from Salvador to Lencois on paved road. A private transfer costs more than the bus but works well for a group, for awkward arrival times, or if you want to stop along the way.
Driving yourself
The road to Lencois and Palmeiras is paved and straightforward. The stretch from Palmeiras to Vale do Capao is unpaved, around 20 km, and deserves care: in the rainy season a low car struggles.
Leg 3: to Vale do Capao and the trailhead
Vale do Capao is in the municipality of Palmeiras, about 72 km from Lencois and around 20 km from the town of Palmeiras on an unpaved road. Vans and private cars cover that stretch from the Palmeiras bus station, usually timed to meet the buses arriving from Salvador.
Our Pati Valley crossings start at Guine. Transport there is not included in the tour price, but we organise it with your booking: send us your arrival time and we will put the logistics together.
How many days to allow
Add one full day on arrival and one on the way back to your trekking days. A 5 day crossing becomes a 7 day trip once travel is counted. People who try to land and start walking on the same date usually regret it: that is 6 to 7 hours on the road before the boots go on.
Best time of year
From October to March, the Brazilian summer, the waterfalls run full and the vegetation is at its greenest, with rain likely in the afternoon. From April to September, the dry season, the trails are firmer and the sky clearer, with cold nights. There is no bad season, only different landscapes.

Allow one full day to arrive and one to return, on top of the trekking days. The Salvador to Chapada leg eats most of a day at each end, and arriving rested changes your first day on the trail.
Do you arrange transport?
We arrange the final leg to the trailhead, agreed when you book. Transfer to Guine is not included in the tour price, but we help put the logistics together as soon as we know your arrival time.
Do I need a visa to visit Brazil?
It depends on your nationality and the rules change, so check the current requirements with the Brazilian consulate for your country before booking flights. We cannot advise on visas, but we can send a booking confirmation if you need one for your application.
